Portugal Visa Decision & Passport Return
The decision is made by the competent authority
After the application has been assessed, the competent Portuguese authority issues a decision. If an external service provider handled document intake, it does not make the visa decision.
Passport return depends on the local process
Applicants may collect the passport in person or receive it through an available delivery service, depending on the country and application channel. Follow the instructions provided at submission.
Check the visa before travelling
If the visa is granted, review the visa sticker carefully. Check the name, passport number, validity dates, number of entries and other details. If something appears incorrect, contact the competent authority or application channel before travel.
Approval does not remove border requirements
A visa allows the holder to travel to the external border and request entry; it does not automatically guarantee admission. Travellers may still be asked to show documents supporting the purpose of travel, accommodation, financial means or other entry conditions.
Residence visa holders have another stage
For residence routes, the visa normally enables entry into Portugal so that the holder can proceed with the applicable residence-authorisation process. Keep key documents available because some may be required again after arrival.
