Document Validity, Originals & Copies

Validity is different from authenticity

A genuine document can still be unsuitable for a visa application if it is too old, incomplete or no longer reflects the applicant’s current circumstances. Many Portugal visa procedures require certain documents to be recent or valid on the date of submission.

Check expiry dates early

Passports, insurance policies, criminal-record certificates and time-sensitive financial or employment documents should be checked before the appointment. If a document is close to expiring, consider whether the application or intended travel period will extend beyond its useful validity.

Originals and copies

The authority or application centre may ask to see original documents while retaining copies. In other cases, certified copies may be required. Local instructions should be followed carefully because the format accepted in one jurisdiction may differ from another.

Make every page readable

Copies should be complete and legible. Do not cut off seals, signatures, QR codes, registration numbers or reverse-side information. Multi-page documents should be submitted in full unless the authority specifically states otherwise.

Keep a complete duplicate file

Applicants should retain a digital and, where useful, paper copy of the entire submitted application. This is especially important if the authority later requests clarification, if a passport is returned separately from other documents, or if the residence process in Portugal requires some of the same evidence again.
