Certified Translation Requirements

When translation may be needed

Documents issued in a language that is not accepted for the relevant Portugal visa or residence procedure may need to be translated. Translation requirements can vary depending on the authority, document type and place of application.

Use an acceptable translator or certification method

A simple informal translation may not be sufficient for official documents. Depending on the procedure, the translation may need to be completed or certified by a person or authority whose certification is recognised for use in Portugal.

Translate the complete document

Names, stamps, annotations, seals, registration numbers and reverse-side text can be important. A partial translation may create doubts about whether the document has been represented accurately.

Keep names consistent

Transliterations of names should be consistent with the passport wherever possible. If a civil document uses a different spelling, an explanatory note or additional evidence may help prevent confusion.

Check whether authentication is also required

Translation and authentication are separate issues. A properly translated document may still need an apostille or legalization, and the translated version may itself require certification depending on the procedure.

Prepare translations before the appointment

Leaving translation until the last moment can delay submission, especially when a document also needs authentication. Identify foreign-language documents early and confirm the formalities before booking or attending the appointment.
