Applying for a Residence Permit in Portugal
Residence permits are handled in Portugal
For many long-term immigration routes, the consular residence visa allows the applicant to enter Portugal and proceed to the residence-permit stage with AIMA.
Common requirements
AIMA’s general residence guidance lists documents such as a valid passport or travel document, a valid residence visa where applicable, proof of means of subsistence and evidence relating to the applicant’s address in Portugal. Route-specific evidence must also be provided.
Accommodation evidence
AIMA may require a declaration concerning the applicant’s address and the legal basis on which the person occupies the property, together with supporting evidence appropriate to the situation.
Tax, social security and health coverage
Depending on the route and stage, proof relating to tax registration, social-security registration or health coverage can be relevant. The exact requirements depend on the type of residence authorisation.
Appointment and digital procedures
AIMA continues to use appointments for many first residence-permit applications while expanding digital procedures for selected processes. Applicants should check the current route-specific AIMA page.
Keep the process receipt
After submitting the residence application, keep the receipt, process number and any communication from AIMA. These details are important if documents need to be added later or if the applicant must contact AIMA about the pending file.
