What Happens After Arriving in Portugal?

Arrival is the start of a new administrative stage

For people entering Portugal on a residence route, obtaining the visa is not the final step. Several practical and immigration-related procedures may follow after arrival.

AIMA residence permit

Residence-visa holders generally proceed to the residence-authorisation stage with AIMA. Depending on the route and the systems in use, this can involve an appointment, digital procedure, document verification and biometric collection.

NIF and tax registration

The Portuguese NIF is used for tax and many everyday financial or contractual activities. People who obtained a NIF as non-residents before moving should review whether their registered address and tax-residence status need to be updated.

NISS and Social Security

People working in Portugal normally need a NISS so that employment and contributions can be recorded in the Social Security system. Self-employed residents also need to understand their registration and contribution obligations.

Healthcare

Eligible residents can organise their SNS identification and local health-centre registration. Keep immigration, identification and address documents available during the process.

Banking and address

A Portuguese bank account can simplify salary payments, rent, direct debits and everyday expenses. Banks commonly request identification, NIF details and address information. The exact checklist varies by institution.

Housing records

Keep the rental agreement, receipts or ownership evidence because address documentation can be relevant to AIMA, tax registration, banking and other services.

Digital public services

Portugal uses online public services extensively. New residents should become familiar with the Tax Authority portal, Social Security digital services and official authentication tools where eligible.

Keep systems consistent

Use the same current address and contact information across AIMA, tax, Social Security, healthcare and banking whenever possible. Updating one system does not automatically update all of them.
