Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa

Who is the D8 designed for?

The D8 is commonly used to describe Portugal’s route for remote professional activity performed for employers or clients outside Portuguese territory. It can apply to qualifying remote employees and independent professionals.

Remote employment evidence

An employee should be prepared to show a genuine employment relationship and the ability to perform the work remotely from Portugal. Supporting evidence can include an employment contract, employer declaration, salary records and other documents demonstrating the arrangement.

Independent professional evidence

Freelancers or self-employed professionals may use service agreements, client contracts, invoices, payment history and other evidence showing ongoing professional activity with clients outside Portugal.

Income requirement

The D8 route includes financial conditions linked to remote-work income. Because the relevant reference values can change, applicants should verify the current threshold on official Portuguese sources before applying.

Accommodation and general residence documents

Applicants also need to meet the general residence-visa requirements concerning identity, accommodation, criminal-record documents and other applicable evidence.

Temporary or residence route?

Portugal’s remote-work framework includes both temporary-stay and residence options. People intending to establish longer-term residence should ensure they are applying through the residence route rather than a temporary option designed for a shorter period.

After arrival

Residence-visa holders proceed to the AIMA residence-permit stage in Portugal. Keep employment, client and income documentation current because it can be relevant again during the residence process.

Tax considerations

Living and working remotely from Portugal can also create tax-residency and cross-border tax questions. Immigration permission and tax treatment are separate matters and should be reviewed independently.
