Portugal D7 Visa for Passive Income
What is the D7 route?
The D7 is commonly used to describe Portugal’s residence pathway for retirees and people who live from regular own-source income. It is designed for long-term residence rather than tourism or a temporary visit.
Income is central to the route
The application should demonstrate that the applicant has regular and sustainable resources appropriate to the D7 pathway. The evidence depends on the source of income and can include pension documents, rental income, investment income or other recognised recurring resources.
Do savings alone replace regular income?
Savings can strengthen an application by showing financial reserves, but the D7 is generally understood as an income-based route. Applicants should build the file around the actual qualifying resources rather than assuming that a large bank balance automatically substitutes for the route’s intended income basis.
Accommodation
Residence applicants are generally expected to show a credible accommodation arrangement in Portugal. The appropriate document depends on how the applicant will occupy the property.
Common residence documents
The file can also include the application form, passport, photographs, criminal-record documents, insurance or health-related evidence and other documents required by the competent consular authority.
Family applications
Where a spouse or other eligible family member is applying, financial and family documentation should be organised consistently. The amounts and evidence required can vary according to household circumstances.
After the visa
Once the visa is granted and the applicant enters Portugal, the next stage is the residence-authorisation process with AIMA. Keep income and accommodation evidence updated because it may be relevant again.
Check current financial thresholds
Income benchmarks can change as Portuguese reference amounts change. Applicants should verify current requirements immediately before preparing the final application.
