Portugal D2 Visa for Entrepreneurs
What is the D2 route?
The D2 is the commonly used name for Portugal’s residence route for entrepreneurs and qualifying self-employed professionals. It is intended for applicants who plan to establish, develop or carry out genuine economic or professional activity in Portugal.
Entrepreneurship and self-employment are related but distinct
An entrepreneur may be creating or investing in a business, while a self-employed professional may provide services directly through an independent professional activity. The supporting documents should reflect the actual model the applicant intends to use.
Business evidence
Entrepreneur applicants can need documentation showing the planned activity, available resources, company structure, investment or commercial preparation. A business plan can help explain the project, but it should be supported by evidence rather than used as a substitute for real preparation.
Professional-service evidence
Self-employed applicants may rely on service agreements, professional qualifications, letters of intent, client relationships or other material showing how the activity will operate in practice.
Financial capacity
Applicants need to demonstrate that they can support themselves and carry out the proposed activity. The route should not be approached as though one universal investment figure guarantees approval.
Accommodation and common documents
Like other residence routes, D2 applicants also need the general residence-visa documents concerning identity, accommodation, financial support, criminal records and other applicable requirements.
After arrival
The D2 visa is followed by the residence-permit stage in Portugal. Business, tax and Social Security registrations may also be relevant depending on the structure of the activity.
Focus on credibility
A coherent application explains what the applicant will do, how the activity is organised, why the evidence supports the plan and how the applicant will maintain lawful residence in Portugal.
