D7 vs D8 Visa: Key Differences
Two popular residence routes with different purposes
The D7 and D8 are both commonly discussed by people planning to live in Portugal, but they are designed for different financial and professional situations. The main distinction is the source of the applicant’s support.
What is the D7 route?
The D7 is commonly associated with retirees and people who can support themselves through regular own-source income. The route is intended for residence rather than a short visit. Applicants generally need to demonstrate sufficient and sustainable resources, suitable accommodation and the other documents required for a Portuguese residence visa.
What is the D8 route?
The D8 is commonly used to describe Portugal’s residence route for remote professional activity. It is designed for qualifying employees and independent professionals whose work is performed for employers or clients outside Portugal.
The key difference is the basis of support
D7 applicants rely mainly on qualifying regular income or resources that fit the income-based residence route. D8 applicants rely on active remote professional activity and must demonstrate the relevant employment or service relationship together with the income evidence required for that route.
Documents are therefore different
A D7 file may focus on pension statements, recurring income, financial records and evidence of stable support. A D8 file may focus on employment contracts, employer declarations, client agreements, invoices or other evidence that the applicant genuinely performs remote work outside Portugal.
Accommodation and general residence requirements
Both routes can require evidence of accommodation, identity documents, criminal-record documents, insurance or health-related evidence and other common residence-visa materials. The exact checklist should be confirmed for the place and date of application.
After arrival
Both routes are residence pathways. Receiving the visa is generally followed by the residence-authorisation stage in Portugal, where AIMA handles the residence permit process.
Which route is more appropriate?
The correct choice depends on the applicant’s real circumstances. Someone whose principal basis is remote employment should not select D7 simply because they also have savings. Likewise, a retiree or person living from regular own-source income may not need to structure an application around remote work if that is not the actual basis of residence.
Check current thresholds
Financial thresholds and procedural details can change. Applicants should verify current official requirements shortly before applying rather than relying on older figures or social-media summaries.
