AIMA Appointments and Residence Permits
What is AIMA?
AIMA is the Portuguese authority responsible for migration, integration and many residence-related procedures. For residence-visa holders, AIMA is central to the stage that follows arrival in Portugal.
Residence visa versus residence permit
The residence visa is normally issued through the Portuguese consular system abroad. The residence permit is a separate authorisation handled in Portugal. Confusing the two stages can lead to missed appointments or incomplete preparation.
How appointments work
AIMA continues to use appointments for many first residence applications, while digital procedures are being introduced for some categories. The available route depends on the applicant’s legal basis and the systems operating at the time.
Documents to prepare
Common evidence can include a valid passport, residence visa, accommodation proof, means of subsistence and documents connected with the residence pathway. Employees, students, family members, remote workers and entrepreneurs can have different route-specific requirements.
Biometrics
Where an in-person appointment is required, biometric collection and document verification can form part of the process.
Missing documents
If AIMA requests additional evidence after a process has started, follow the official channel specified in the notification. Digital submission channels can change, so applicants should rely on current AIMA instructions.
Keep every receipt and reference
Save appointment confirmations, process numbers, payment records and copies of submitted documents. These details are important when following up on a pending application.
Check current information
AIMA procedures have evolved significantly in recent years. Older guides can become outdated quickly, so verify the latest route-specific procedure before acting.
