Utilities, Internet & Mobile Services

Check what is already active

Before opening new utility contracts, ask the landlord or seller which services are active and whether accounts must be transferred, closed or opened from the beginning.

Documents commonly requested

Providers can ask for identification, NIF, the supply address, bank details for direct debit and evidence that you have a legal connection to the property. Requirements vary by provider.

Electricity and gas

Portugal has competitive retail energy markets, so residents can compare suppliers and tariffs. The cheapest advertised price is not always the cheapest total package; review standing charges, contract periods and bundled services.

Water

Water is normally managed by the municipal or regional provider serving the property. Ask for the meter reading when responsibility for the property changes.

Internet and mobile

Telecommunications contracts can include minimum commitment periods. Check installation times, cancellation terms and whether the advertised speed is available at the exact address.

Keep proof of closure when moving

When leaving a property, record final meter readings and keep confirmation that contracts were transferred or cancelled. This reduces the risk of later charges for consumption after departure.
