Social Security Registration After Starting Work
Employees and Social Security
People working in Portugal generally need a NISS so that the employment relationship and contributions can be recorded in the Social Security system. An employer can request a NISS for a foreign worker in qualifying circumstances and must comply with the rules for communicating the employment relationship.
Check that your details are correct
Once the employment begins, make sure the employer has the correct NISS, NIF and identity information. Errors can cause problems later when accessing contribution records or Social Security rights.
Self-employed activity
Independent professionals have a different contribution framework. Opening self-employed activity with the Tax Authority and dealing with Social Security are related but separate steps. Contribution rates, reporting periods and exemptions depend on the circumstances.
Social Security Direct
Portugal’s online Social Security services are used for many administrative tasks. New residents who work should become familiar with the digital system and keep their contact information updated.
Contribution history
Review contribution records periodically rather than waiting until a benefit or pension application. If employment periods or payments appear to be missing, correcting them earlier is usually easier.
Cross-border workers
People who work across more than one country, are temporarily posted, or remain covered by another social-security system may be subject to special coordination rules. Those cases should be checked separately.
