School Enrolment for Children in Portugal

Start early

Families moving with school-age children should investigate enrolment before or soon after arrival. The process depends on the child’s age, school level, address and whether the family is applying to a public, private or international school.

Prepare school records

Bring previous report cards, school certificates and any documents explaining the curriculum or grade completed. Foreign education records may need translation or recognition depending on the situation.

Identification and address

Schools can request identification for the child and parents or guardians, Portuguese contact details and evidence of address. Public-school placement can be affected by catchment and availability.

Health and vaccination information

Keep vaccination records and relevant medical information available. Families should also arrange the child’s SNS registration where eligible.

Language support

Children entering Portuguese-language schools may need Portuguese-language support. Ask the school how it assesses language needs and what support is available.

Plan for administrative timing

If you arrive during the academic year, contact the competent school or education service promptly. Do not assume that a preferred school will always have an immediate place available.
