Residence Permit Renewal

Start before the document expires

Residence-permit renewal rules and channels have changed several times as Portugal has modernised migration administration. Residents should check AIMA’s current renewal instructions well before the expiry date shown on the permit.

Renewal channels can differ

Some renewals are handled through digital platforms, while other cases can require a different procedure. Eligibility for an online route can depend on the type of permit, expiry period and administrative system in use.

Keep your records current

Before renewal, make sure your passport, Portuguese address, tax information, Social Security information and route-specific circumstances are up to date. If important facts have changed, identify whether supporting documents are required.

Retain evidence of the application

Save payment references, submission confirmations, receipts and messages from AIMA. These can be important while a renewal is pending.

Travel while renewal is pending

Do not assume that a domestic extension of document validity is automatically accepted for international travel. Check the current rules and the requirements of airlines and destination countries before leaving Portugal with an expired or pending residence document.

Use current official information

Because renewal mechanisms can change quickly, older online tutorials may be outdated. The current AIMA website and official notices should be treated as the primary procedural reference.
