Registering with a Local Health Centre
Primary care in Portugal
Local health centres are an important entry point to Portugal’s public primary-care system. After settling in Portugal, residents should identify the health centre responsible for the address where they live.
Prepare identification and address evidence
The administrative documents requested can vary, but residents should be ready to show identification, their SNS user number where already assigned, Portuguese contact details and evidence relating to their address or residence status.
Family doctor availability
Registration with a health centre does not necessarily mean that a family doctor will be assigned immediately. Availability differs by area. Even without an assigned family doctor, the health centre can still be relevant for public primary-care services and administrative guidance.
Children and family members
Families should register each eligible family member separately. Keep vaccination records, medical summaries and prescription information available, especially when transferring care for children or people with ongoing medical needs.
Emergency care is separate
Health-centre registration is not the same as emergency access. Portugal has separate emergency and urgent-care pathways. New residents should learn which services are appropriate for routine care, urgent advice and emergencies.
Update your details
If your address, telephone number or email changes, update the information used by healthcare services so appointments and notifications reach you correctly.
