Proof of Address & Residence in Portugal

Why address evidence matters

A Portuguese address is used across many administrative procedures, including residence permits, tax registration, banking, healthcare and contracts. The acceptable proof depends on the authority and the legal basis on which you occupy the property.

Rental and ownership situations

Common evidence can include a residential lease, property ownership documentation or another legally recognised arrangement. AIMA’s general residence guidance also refers to a declaration by the applicant explaining the terms on which they reside at the stated address, such as owner, tenant, subtenant, usufructuary or borrower under a loan-for-use arrangement.

Living with family or another host

If the property is not in your name, additional evidence may be necessary to establish both the host’s connection to the property and your right to live there. Do not assume that an informal statement will satisfy every authority.

Keep addresses consistent

Where possible, use the same current address across AIMA, the Tax Authority, Social Security, healthcare, banks and other services. Inconsistent addresses can create administrative delays or missed correspondence.

Moving to a new address

When you move, identify which authorities and service providers must be updated. Changing the address in one system does not necessarily update all other databases automatically.

Keep evidence

Retain the lease, receipts and other documents that establish the period during which you lived at an address. These records can be useful later for renewals, tax matters or other administrative procedures.
