Opening a Bank Account in Portugal
Why a Portuguese account can be useful
A local bank account can simplify salary payments, rent, direct debits, tax payments and everyday expenses. It is not necessarily a legal requirement for every new resident, but it is a common practical step after moving.
NIF is commonly required
Portuguese official guidance identifies the NIF as necessary for many financial and contractual activities, including opening bank accounts. Applicants should therefore make sure their NIF details are correct before starting the banking process.
Identity and address checks
Banks are subject to identification and anti-money-laundering rules. The exact document list is set by the bank and can depend on whether the customer is resident or non-resident. Be prepared to provide valid identification, NIF information, address evidence and information about employment, income or the source of funds.
Resident versus non-resident status
If you opened an account before moving to Portugal as a non-resident, inform the bank when your residence and tax details change. The bank may request updated address, tax-residency or immigration documents.
Compare fees and services
Account-maintenance fees, debit cards, international transfers, branch access and English-language service vary. Compare several banks rather than assuming the first available account is the most suitable.
Do not rely on one universal checklist
Bank requirements are institution-specific and can change. Check the bank’s current documentation rules before attending an appointment or uploading documents online.
