Family Reunification After Establishing Residence

Family reunification is a separate procedure

A resident who has established legal residence in Portugal may be able to request reunification with eligible family members. The process is distinct from simply adding a relative to the original residence file.

Who can qualify?

The law defines the family relationships that can qualify and the conditions that apply. The documentation depends on the relationship and can include marriage certificates, birth certificates, adoption records or evidence of dependency.

AIMA stage

Where the family member is outside Portugal, an AIMA authorisation stage can be required before the relative applies for the corresponding residence visa through the Portuguese consular system.

Accommodation and means of support

The resident may need to show adequate accommodation and sufficient means of subsistence for the household. Keep employment, income, housing and tax records organised before starting the process.

Foreign civil documents

Marriage and birth records issued abroad may require authentication and translation. Begin document preparation early because obtaining replacement civil records, apostilles or certified translations can take time.

After arrival

The family member normally proceeds to the relevant residence stage in Portugal. Keep copies of the AIMA authorisation, visa, civil-status evidence and address records.
