Employment Administration After Arrival

Make sure the employment documentation matches your residence route

If your immigration status is based on employed work, keep the final employment contract and any employer documentation used in the visa or AIMA process. Changes to the employer or job can have administrative implications depending on the residence route and timing.

Provide the correct NIF and NISS

Your employer needs accurate identification details for payroll and Social Security reporting. Check that the NIF and NISS on employment and payroll records are correct.

Understand the payslip

Portuguese payslips normally show gross salary, deductions and net salary. Tax withholding and employee Social Security contributions are distinct deductions. Keep payslips and annual income records because they can be useful for tax filing, renewals, rentals and banking.

Bank details

Employers commonly pay salary by bank transfer. Confirm the account information and retain records of salary payments.

Address and contact changes

If you move, update the employer as well as the public authorities that maintain your address. An address change in payroll does not automatically update AIMA, tax or healthcare systems.

Keep employment records

Retain contracts, amendments, payslips and termination documents. These records can later be relevant to residence renewals, unemployment rights, Social Security and tax matters.
