Changing Your Address After Moving

One update does not necessarily update every system

Portugal has several separate public databases and private service providers. Changing your address with one organisation does not mean that AIMA, the Tax Authority, Social Security, healthcare services and your bank will all be updated automatically.

AIMA

Residence-permit holders should follow the current AIMA procedure for changes affecting their residence record. Keep evidence of the new address and the legal basis on which you occupy the property.

Tax Authority

Your tax address is linked to the NIF and is important for tax-residence registration and official correspondence. Update it through the Tax Authority procedure when required.

Healthcare and Social Security

Update the address and contact details used by the health centre and Social Security so letters, appointments and notifications are sent correctly.

Bank, employer and utilities

Inform your bank, employer, insurance provider, telecommunications company and utility suppliers. Update direct debit details if the move involves closing or transferring accounts.

Keep proof of the change

Save confirmation receipts or screenshots showing when important address updates were submitted. This can be useful if correspondence continues to be sent to the previous address.
