AIMA Residence Permit After Arrival

The residence visa is not the residence permit

For many long-term Portugal immigration routes, the visa issued abroad is the document that allows the holder to enter Portugal for the purpose of establishing residence. The residence permit is a separate stage handled in Portugal by AIMA. New arrivals should therefore treat the visa as the beginning of the residence process rather than the final step.

Check the route-specific AIMA procedure

AIMA states that residence-permit applications are generally made by appointment, while electronic procedures are being implemented for some residence-visa holders. The exact process can differ according to the legal basis of residence, so the applicant should check the current AIMA page for the relevant category soon after arrival.

Prepare the core documents

Common requirements can include a valid passport, a valid residence visa where applicable, proof of sufficient means, evidence concerning the applicant’s address in Portugal and the documents that establish the specific residence route. Employment, study, family, remote-work and income-based applicants can therefore have different supporting requirements.

Keep the original application file

Documents used at the consular stage may be useful again in Portugal. Keep secure copies of the visa application, employment or study documents, income evidence, accommodation records, family certificates and any authenticated or translated documents.

Appointments, biometrics and follow-up

Where in-person attendance is required, AIMA may verify documents and collect biometric data. Keep appointment confirmations and process receipts. If AIMA later requests missing documents, follow the channel specified in the notification and retain evidence of submission.

Do not wait until the visa is close to expiry

Administrative procedures can take time. Review the post-arrival requirements early, make sure your Portuguese address and contact details are documented and follow current AIMA instructions rather than relying on old procedures found in forums or social media.
